There are several different options for affiliate programs. And, there are many programs available. Be sure to do your research and check out the various companies offering these affiliate programs. Beware of some unscrupulous companies out there that do not deliver on what is promised. Carefully review the details and contracts for the affiliate programs. Review several before you decide on a particular one. Or, better yet, sample several programs over a period of time, and then decide which program works best and which type works best for your web site. There are not hard and fast rules when it comes to affiliate marketing – you just need to find what works for your web site. Often, what works is based on the number of visitors to your web site and the demographics of your visitors. It is best to select ads that are related to your web site, but not competitive. Unrelated ads will not perform well. Think about your visitors and choose accordingly – put yourself in the position of a visitor and ask yourself what you would want to see advertised and what would provide you an incentive to click on those ads.
Some programs pay you for the number of clicks on a particular ad – so all you need to have are unique visitors that will be motivated to click on that ad. These ads are called Pay Per Click or PPC, and are the most common types of affiliate programs. They are also the lowest paying affiliate program, as you get paid per click. However, if your web site has a large amount of daily traffic, say upwards of 3,000 unique visitors a day, then this affiliate program may be for you.
Another type of affiliate program is a Pay Per Lead or PPL. This program pays you for the number of leads generated off of the ad on your web site. A visitor to your web site would see the ad, click on it and input various pieces of required information. Once that information is submitted, then it is considered a lead and you receive payment for it. The type of lead generated is up to the advertiser. It can be as a lead of just an email address, or up to a large amount of information including complete contact information and demographic information. It is important to note that the more information required, the less number of people there are that are willing to complete all of that information.
Pay Per Sales ads or PPS, are another type of affiliate program. You get paid based on the number of sales generated from visitors to your web site that click on that particular ad and make a purchase. These types of ads are the most difficult to work with, because you really need to know your demographic of visitors to your web site. Then, you need to decide what types of purchases your web site visitors would be interested in and likely to make. There will be a lot of experimenting with this type of ad. These ads tend to pay the most per sale, but that is because sales are hard to come by.
